Jacques and Rollande: March 7 - Convent baked deserts.

We left the apartment early this morning so that we could go to a convent to buy cookies before the rain started. We went to Convento de Santa Ines. The nuns here are cloistered but they sell cookies and cakes behind a closed door to make money. When you arrive, you ring a bell and a nun comes behind the door. You state what you want and put the money on the tray of a revolving door and turn the door. The nun on the other side takes the money and puts your cookies on the turntable and slides it to your side of the door. They seem to do a good business because while we were there, there was a steady stream of people coming to buy sweets one at a time. We bought chocolate cookies sold by the pound and it was so much fun that we bought another kind of sweets called pestiños with anise and honey just so we could do it again.

On the way back we stopped to visit La Anunciacion church since it was open. We took a few pictures and almost made it home before the rain started. We caught up on reading André and Wendy’s blog. They are in southern France. Around 1:30 it looked like the rain was down to a light drizzle, so we went to the bar down the street for lunch. It was packed since their tables outside were not open. They found us a table. Jacques ordered the grilled tuna belly which was just so-so and I ordered the whole grilled squid in garlic sauce. It was just as amazing as the first time and the dressing on the salad was good. We wonder what they use, it seems to be just vinegar and oil but it must be some sort of sherry vinegar because it has a bit of sweetness to it that is awesome. Along with this we ordered some grilled peppers (I don’t remember the name) that are definitely a do again.

The sun was out by the time we finished lunch, so we decided to walk to the church next to the convent with the cookies. The doors were open this morning but there was a mass in progress, so we decided to come back another time. Unfortunately, it was closed by the time we arrived. We will have to go another time. Since the sun was out and we had no plans, we decided to just walk and get lost and that is exactly what we did. We did manage to find our way back in time for happy hour.
