We were out of the apartment not long after 7:30. The sun wasn’t up yet. We walked to the bus stop and waited in line for 10 minutes or so for the bus to the train station. The web site said that all the trains to Cadiz were full so if we couldn’t get on a train to Cadiz we were going to go to Cordoba and if that was not available Jerez or anywhere on our list of places that we want to visit. For Cadiz, our only option was the 8:32 train to Cadiz that was leaving in 5 minutes, so off we go, going as fast as 70-year-olds can. We made it with a couple of minutes to spare. Our seats were a couple of cars from each other, so we made plans to meet on the platform in Cadiz. It’s a 1 hour and 45-minute train ride with half a dozen stops and not much to see except farmland. There was a lady coughing quite a bit not far away so we put on our masks.

Cadiz is a nice seaport which is obviously a summer destination because there are long stretches of sandy beaches and a long-paved promenade along the waterfront. It was 17 degrees but felt much cooler with the wind coming from the sea. We were happy to have our jackets. This city has many nicer plazas with benches and lots of trees than Seville. They are almost like little parks with all the trees and flowers. It must be nice in the summer with all these shady areas to sit. There are many statues, sculptures, and fountains as well making these oases very inviting to sit and relax.

Our caching brought us to many of these statues and parks as well as many churches. We visited some of the churches as well as Castillo de Santa Catalina. There were a few ramparts, buildings as well as the chapel that was literally filled with plastic flowers that someone had made. There was hardly room to walk to the end of the room.

By 6 we were tired out and had seen everything on our list, but our train wasn’t before 8:40 so we found a small bar and nursed a cana (small beer) to pass the time. We arrived back at the apt, at 11:00 very tired with more than 23 km walked during the day. It was way too much. We will plan our next trip better.
