February 23 - Food Tour

Today we were excited to go for our first food tour. We met our guide in the square. He was the one holding the orange umbrella. There was 5 of us, a couple from Texas and another young girl from the New Jersey who now lives in Berlin. We started with what they eat for breakfast, churros and chocolate to dip the churros in.  At the next stop we had anchovies that were soaked in vinegar and olive oil and a motadito al pringa, which is basically a sandwich made with a mixture of different stew meat. It was very tasty and one of the favorites with everyone. We were served a glass of vermut which is a kind of sherry. It was good and not sweet. We also had a bit of tortilla (a kind of thick potato pancake). This one was kind of bland, we have had some that were most tasty than today. The next stop there were 2 skewers of pork to share which were good and a small plate of mushrooms with a thick white garlic sauce on top which was very good. The next stop consisted of a plate of 4 different iberico jambon and our guide explained the different qualities and what to look for. On the plate was also a piece each of 2 different kinds of paldota (not sure if it’s the right spelling) cheese one made from sheep and the other goat. We also got to try the orange wine which wasn’t orange but rather brownish or beige. It actually tasted pretty good. At the last spot we were served 2 plates of pork cheeks to share. The problem with this plate was there were 5 of us but only 4 pieces of meat. We cut the meat in two so everyone got to have a taste. There was also some fried eggplant which was cut up into strips french fry style with a drizzling of cane honey. Both were very good.

With this we had a choice of beer or vino de Verano which is their version of sangria. We went with the wine since we had never tried it before.

All in all the tour was ok but I wouldn’t say it was great for the money we spent. There were some things that were listed that we were supposed to sample that we never saw or tasted. Some of the plates like the pork cheeks hardly had enough for everyone to taste. Anchovies are not very big and we had one and a half each.  Apart from the 1st service of churros, the servings were not big. The young girl from Berlin didn’t eat all her churros because she wanted to save some room for the rest of the tour. I don’t think that she went home having overeaten. We thought that we might be able to skip supper but we had to snack at supper time. I don’t think that I would recommend this tour but since we had never done one before we have nothing to compare it with. Joline’s tapas tour in Lisbon had leftovers at most places, there was none at our tour and not because we ate a lot. The fact that we were an odd number, I think that he downsized rather than upsized.

After the tour we came home the long way in order to pick up a couple of caches. So, my day when I was going to rest my aching feet and ankles turned into another 14 km day. Depending on how my feet feel I might skip the geocaching event tomorrow.

This evening we also received a note saying that our trip to Ronda and Setenil for Sunday was cancelled. We rebooked for the 17th of March. They cancelled because there was not enough people registered. I hope that it is not cancelled again because that is close to the end of our stay here.

  1. I’m sorry your food tour was disappointing. As you said, the Lisbon “Oh my Cod” food tour had leftovers & not because it wasn’t delicious. The servings were generous.
I enjoy your photos & stories.
