This morning Dominique took us on walking tour of Cussac giving us a history lesson on Cussac while showing us the sites. We took a trail behind the local supermarket where he showed us the pond that was dug in case there was a fire at the supermarket. We visited the church, the old school where Agnès' mother used to walk 3 km to and from school. We saw 2 different towers called '"clédier" which basically was a drier for fruit (mostly chestnuts), years ago.
Many businesses are closed and for sale because like everywhere else, nowadays the younger generation are moving away from the small villages to the bigger cities.
We passed through narrow alleys where we would not have
dared venture on our own. We were told if there isn't a sign saying no
trespassing or private property then it's open to the public. At the end of our walkabout we had a good view of the Chateaux de Cromières.
While we were gone for our tour Agnès was busy at the house preparing lunch which consisted of half cooked foie gras, boudin noir (blood sausage) served with fried apples and chestnuts. It was my first time eating boudin and to my surprise, it tasted good. It had cooked chestnuts inside the sausage as well. Dessert was white cheese and fruit salad. The white cheese has the consistency of yogurt.
In the afternoon we headed out to a place called Rochechouart, where there is a 20km crater created by a meteorite that fell a million years ago. We saw the castle of Rochechouart, and went inside the walls of the castle, visited the church, and walked through the small town.
We also walked in a trail that had a dolmen built by the Limousin habitants between the years 4500 and 2000 B.C. It's hard to imagine something this old with hardly any tools available to carve rock lasting this long. As well we visited a very old church that had a sarcophagus near the entrance. I don’t remember the century the church was built but it was quite old.
On the way back to Cussac we passed through the village of Saint Basil, where I think we saw the chateau de Cromière.
In the evening, we watched the movie "l'ordre secrete" de Phil Comeau. Which brought on a lively conversation.
