March 5, 2026 - Angoulême

We left our apt. at 8:45 for train station and arrived early with plenty of time but our train was 17 minutes late leaving. Apparently, there was a lack of personnel. Despite leaving late we arrived in Angoulême at the designated time.

Agnès and Dominique were there to meet us at the station.  In the 10 years since we have last seen them, they had not changed much.

They had made reservations at a restaurant where we ate the daily special which was "coqulet", which is basically a very small rooster. It came with fries and dessert which was chocolate mousse, crème brûlée, and panacotta. All in tiny dishes on our plate. Everything was delicious.

After lunch we walked around Angoulême to look at the painted walls that Angoulême is known for.

At the train station

Lucky Luke

City Hall

Cathedral

Oldest house in Angoulême

Every face sculpture is different

The cathedral has been heavily renovated but the tower is in it's original state.

Many narrow streets

Amazing optical illusion. The wall is perfectly flat

Castle near our friend's summer home.

After doing the tour of Angoulême we drove the 1h30 minutes to Cussac.

With the appetizers Dominique served us a sparkling red wine. This was a first for us because even though we've had sparkling white and rosé wines before, we’ve never had any red sparkling wine. It has a lot of flavonoids.

Supper was a périgourdine salad with gizzards, fresh figs stuffed with foie gras, foie gras en croute (foie gras royal), nuts and croutons as well as dried duck breast. A very filling salad but this was followed by a cheese plate consisting of 4 different cheeses. Then there was still desert to come, a Clafoutis aux mirabelles (small yellow prunes). We did not go to bed hungry.
