March 3 - Piraeus


This morning we decided to take the metro to the port of Piraeus, where we had docked 7 years ago while on a Mediterranean cruise. We wanted to scout the area to see where we will need to go when we go to the island of Hydra. After asking at about 4 different places we finally found the place where we need to buy our tickets. It is at the same place where Odette will have to go when she goes to Paros. The metro ride was about a half hour, but it was not on a modern train as in the center of the city. This one was old and painted with graffiti and not air conditioned and was a lot slower. Nevertheless, it got us there in time.

While we were in Piraeus a cache took us to a museum.  It is a ship that was built in the USA for the 2nd world war and then given to Greece to help after the war. It is now a floating museum. It is called the SS Hellas Liberty.


At this time of the year there is only one ferry per day. It leaves at 10 and arrives at noon. 4 hours later it comes back. We will have to figure out if the cost is worth going for only 4 hours.

Yesterday I received my week’s report from Fitbit. We had walked over 88 km and that is with 2 days of travelling where I did not reach my 10,000 steps for the day. If we just look at Tuesday to Tuesday which is the day we arrived then it is over 100 km. I can't believe that we have already been here a week. I think that we have already seen most of the highlights. Now we start going on the side streets to see what there is to find.


The Greeks do not seem to be strong on recycling. There is one bag to put everything recyclable, bottles, glass, plastics, paper etc. and another bag for the rest. I have accumulated enough plastic bags from shopping at the market that I don't know what to do with them. I always carry my own bag, but they still put it in a bag. The only exception is the grocery store where like at home you have to pay for one.
