February 20, 2026 - River Cruise Day

We started our day by walking to the Capucin market and finally our guy who sold the cannelés was there. He told us that he is only there from Friday to Sunday, so we stocked up on canelés for the week. They are very good and compare well with the ones that are sold in the stores all boxed up for double the price. 

After the market we headed to the river where we were to start our river tour, the final thing on our Bordeaux city pass. It was cloudy when we arrived at the dock but the sun started coming just as we were starting our cruise. The cruise was about an hour and a half with a break halfway through, where we were offered a glass of wine and a canelé each. On the cruise we passed under one of the bridges that she called the golden bridge. The reason for the name was while they were building the bridge they were dredging the sand to mix their concrete from the bottom of the river, when at some point someone noticed that some of the sand was shiny. It turns out it was a pile of coins from the 1st century. It was too late to recuperate the coins that were already integrated into the concrete, but all the rest of the coins were brought up and are now in the Aquitaine museum. So, it truly is a golden bridge. On the cruise we met an American couple who have been living in France for the last year. Their visas expired yesterday but was extended while they wait for it to be renewed for another year. They have been living in Reims but are looking for a place to rent in the Bordeaux region. They also apologized for their President.

Refreshment time

After leaving them, we headed to the market to find lunch and buy something to cook for supper but we arrived as they were closing up. Instead after a short break at our apartment, we decided to go to l’école des vins where we tried 2 wines each and shared a plate of cheese and one of charcuterie. We found one that we particularly liked (Jacques 1st choice) and a couple more that were almost as good. We will go to the wine cellar that the server suggested to buy some to take home. These are wines that will keep and get even better as they age.

Lots of people out today.

While walking around yesterday we saw a much bigger supermarket than the ones in our neighborhood so after l’école des vins we went there to pick up supplies for the weekend. It turns out that the bigger stores are no cheaper than the small in-city grocery stores. We did pick up chicken, lemons, potatoes, brussels sprouts, flan, and garlic. Tomorrow we will go at the market again for fresh shrimps and fresh pasta for one of our suppers during the weekend.


Every time we leave the apartment, we have to go down these stairs.
