We set off this morning on bus no 103 to go to Benal Pueblo
or old town as it is known. It took about a half hour to get there, uphill most
of the way. I was glad I was in a bus.
It is a quaint little town built on the mountain side,
the main street is so narrow that they have a traffic light at each end because
it can only accommodate one lane at a time. In the pueblo a lot of the houses
have flower pots clinging to the walls.
There are flower pots everywhere, lots of ceramic tiles on the walls and
colorful shrubs as well as lots of little fountains.
We found an old church with a beautiful vista as well
as a castlillo de Colomares while looking for caches. The castillo is a monument
in the form of a castle dedicated to the life and adventures of Christopher
Columbus. On the way back we strolled through the inside streets that are even
narrower than the main street. Every few hundred meters, there seems to be a
little square with benches in the middle of all the houses. I imagine this is
where the locals sit and chat. We were the only ones there. We stopped for
tapas in one square. They served a dish
of olives as we sat down. Jacques had the calamari, ribs and pig cheeks while I
had wings, calamari and patatas Brava. It was an enjoyable day.
