October 21 - Cruise - Day 9

Today we got to sleep in until 7. We woke up to another beautiful view, this time it was of the goddess peak from the lesser of the three gorges. We were taken on small boats in groups of 20 to see the gorges. (lesser = narrower). Our local guide sang to us in Chinese. This excursion and yesterday's optional tour were the 2 better tours so far. The view is indescribable it is so beautiful. We were told that the people who live here have a life expectancy of 10 years more than the people who live in the rest of China. The air is cleaner some who live in the mountains don't have electricity yet. The children climb 2 hours in the morning to get to school where the school day is 5 hours long. Then they climb back down to go home. We saw the mandarin trees planted in rows on the mountain.

Our small tour boats for the day

Just in case you need to do a pit stop

We then went on the upstairs deck to watch while our boat sailed through the beautiful Wu gorge. After lunch we watched while we sailed by the Qutang gorge.

They like to build temples high up in the mountains

Is this the Chinese version of Stairway to Heaven?

I went upstairs after to read a while since it was too hot outside, while Jacques went for a lesson on how to play mah-jong.
