February 24, 2017 - Last day in Fairfield Bay

Everything is brown but very playable

Today is our final day in Fairfield Bay. We had a great week and it gave us a nice break on our trip. We played golf 2 times and did a lot of geocaching with our friends from North Carolina. It was strange playing golf since the grass is dormant this time of the year and as a result, everything is brown, including the greens.

We are in Van Buren County which is a dry county, so we need to drive to the next county if we need to buy alcohol. The funny thing is that our apartment has wine glasses and the local stores sell mixes to make drinks like margaritas etc.

The scenery in the area is very beautiful with the Ozark mountains and lakes but the roads are narrow, with lots of curves and very hilly.

The population of Fairfield Bay is 2,327 with 9 large churches. We wonder how they stay open.

We were told by the locals that the temperature we got during our stay was much better than normal for the time of year, so we got lucky.

All along our route from Tennessee, we saw sets of 3 wooden crosses in the fields. We did not know the reason. Turns out the first ones were put out in 1984 in West Virginia by Bernard Coffindaffer. Over the years, over 2,000 crosses have been installed in the US, Zambia and the Philippines.

Tomorrow, we have a long drive as we make our way to Bartlesville, Oklahoma to visit my aunt, uncle and cousin for a couple of days.
