Wow this festival is much bigger than I thought. Every night we go
out and there are more and more lights. The sculptures are enormous. Some are
already a few stories high and are not yet finished. But what a shame that they
will be burning them they are so well made and so nice to look at. I had read a
bit about the Fallas festival in Valencia, but I never expected the figures to
be so big. These sculptures cost a fortune to build and they are all going up
in smoke on the 19th. The most expensive cost 350,000 euros. That’s half a million
dollars and there are at least a dozen of these all over the city. We can see
the progress from one day to the next. They are so tall that they have big
cranes to put them together and of course no one is wearing a hard hat.

We went to watch the lights being turned on in the Cuba-Cadiz
barrio. We were on Cuenca street. What a show. Las Vegas could come and learn.
The play of the lights was beautiful. When we thought that everything was finished,
we started to leave and got caught in people going the way that we were coming
from. Turns out there was another show. So, we watched this one from the other
direction. But there were too many people. Where we watched the first show,
there was plenty of space but the second one even when there was no more room,
people kept shoving to get closer. We left as soon as that show finished.
Whether there was going to be more or not we don’t know.
