Today, we left Grand Junction en route to Denver via
the Vail Pass after spending extra time in Utah. Turns out spending extra time
in Utah was a good thing since the Vail Pass was closed yesterday because of a
snow storm. It was a great drive while following the Colorado River for a good
part of the day. It is hard to believe that the small river that we saw today
could carve out the Grand Canyon further down stream.
Driving through Vail was also very interesting as we
passed many ski resorts. There was lots of snow on the trails and the side of
the road, but the roads were mostly clear with just a few wet spots here and
there. Going through the pass, we reached an elevation of 12,000 feet.
Once we reached Denver, we stopped for a bit but
decided not to downtown and opted instead to continue towards Kansas and
stopped for the night about 40 miles past the border. We were expecting to
enter another time zone at the border, but our car GPS did not change time, so
we asked the hotel clerk about the time zone. She told us that it about 30
miles further east. Sure enough, the next morning the car GPS changed time
where the clerk had indicated. With a temperature of 12 degrees, it was quite comfortable.
